Abstract

Micro/nano-fabrication are widely used for a variety of biological, biomedical, and engineering purposes. The corresponding surface phenomenon of these devices is the critical factor to be considered. Dr. Choi has been interested in developing micro/nano-scale fabricated devices to examine associated engineering and biomedical issues and problems. In this presentation, he will introduce his recent achievement related to post array, small container, and nanotubes. In regard to the post array, he will explain how to fabricate high aspect ratio posts, surface characterization of post arrays, molecular transport through crowded environments of post arrays, and natural evaporation of small droplets on this surface. Another engineered device, which is used to examine molecular transport, coupled enzyme reaction, and cell-free transcription/ translation, will be introduced to examine. The final fabricated example is titanium nanotubes (TNT) that are eventually used for artificial bones to improve cellular attachment and their mechanical property. In regard to this device, surface aging/degradation and cell adhesion on TNT surfaces will be explained. One additional topic of a diode pumping system to provide dynamic cell culture environments will be also explained.
