COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This short course offers a total of 8 technical lectures (each 50 minute-long), which are designed to teach the fundamentals of optics and optical systems for engineering applications.
The key optical concepts are presented with an emphasis on their physical meanings to help create a better understanding of optics and utilize it more effectively for engineering applications. The specific areas include (1) nature of light – reflection, refraction, polarization, birefringence and diffraction, (2) optical elements – mirrors, prisms, lenses, wave plates, etc., (3) light sources – light emitting diode, laser diode, lasers, etc. (4) coherent and non-coherent optical interference, (5) classical and advanced optical systems and (6) examples of engineering applications.
About the Instructor: Dr. Bongtae Han received his BS and MS degrees from Seoul National University in 1981 and 1983, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Tech in 1991. He is currently a Professor and a Director of Electronic Products and Systems Division of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Maryland; and is directing the LOMSS (Laboratory for Optomechanics and Micro/nano Semiconductor/Photonics Systems http://www.lomss.umd.edu/) of CALCE (Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering).
