5.   :

Cellular assays offer important insights into biological mechanisms, yet are beset with challenges in the implementation in life sciences and discovery research.  Wall-less plate technology, DropArray™, has been developed to address the particular challenges in designing cellular assays free from the conventional constraints of cost, availability, and logistics.

DropArray employs a unique combination of surface science and fluidics to create a wall-less plate.  The DropArray plate features a hydrophilic pattern array that functions  exactly the same as the wells of a conventional microplate, separated by physical walls.

The unique approach of the DropArray System enables great flexibility and freedom in running cellular assays.  Most importantly, the DropArray system offers miniaturization to as low as 1 ul per well, minimizing the consumption of expensive reagents and limited primary cells, for example. The advantages and benefits of the DropArray system allow cellular assays to be run in a way that biology dictates, not by the cost of an assay, the availability of cells, or cell adherence, even in high throughput screening.

The talk will also include personal stories of brining a technology company stated from Asia into the US market as an Asian scientist-entrepreneur.

6.   :

Namyong Kim is CEO and a co-founder of Curiox Biosystems, a company with operations in Singapore and California, USA and a lead inventor of DropArray™ technology.

Prior to CurioxNamyong was a principal investigator at Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology under A*STAR in Singapore.  Before relocating to Singapore, he was based in the US where he had the opportunity to work with early-stage high-tech ventures and multinational companies.  At BioTroveNamyong  led a chemistry group in the development of the OpenArray™ platform, a miniaturized chip-based platform for homogeneous biological assays.  Prior to that, he worked with the co-founders of Arradial, as their Director of Chemistry. At Agilent Technologies, Namyong worked on DNA microarrays as a Research Scientist.

Namyong Kim received his PhD in Chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and his BSc from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
