5. 내용 :


Recently, there have been an increasing number of efforts to interface nanowires with living cells to monitor the physicochemical properties of the cells and deliver biomolecules into subcellular environments. Their small dimensions and mechanical flexibility minimize the damage they inflict on cellular structures and functions, while their high surface area ensures proper cell-nanowire communication. Furthermore, because of their high refractive index, nanowires can guide visible light efficiently in high-index physiological liquids and living cells. In addition, the surface of nanowires can be functionalized readily, enabling payload delivery and specific sensing of biological events. All of these considerations make the nanowire a powerful platform to interface with living cells for various purposes. In this talk, I will discuss how semiconductor nanowires, one dimensional nanostructures, can be utilized as a powerful tool to deliver biomolecules into cells, monitor biological events, and study nanostructure-living cell interactions.


6. 약력 :


Dr. Hoon E. Jeong received a B.S. in Biosystems & Biomaterials Science and Engineering from Seoul National University in 2004 and a Ph.D in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the same university in 2009. Currently, he is doing postdoctoral research in the area of semiconductor nanowires with Professor Peidong Yang at University of California, Berkeley. His research interests are mainly focused on nano-bio interface, bio-energy harvesting and solar-to-fuel conversion with 1D semiconductor nanomaterials, as well as large scale integration of nanomaterials with unconventional nanofabrication techniques.


 


Dr. Jeong has been awarded a Samsung HumanTech Thesis Competition Gold, Silver, and Bronze Prize (2009, 2010), Nano Today Student Travel Prize (2009), The Best Graduate Student Paper Award (2009), The First KAUST Research Fellowship Award (2008-2011), The First Surface Engineering Best Paper Award (2007), The Best Research Achievements of Korea (2009, 2006) and Academic Excellence and Character Award (2004-2008).
