5. Abstract :

Structures and Properties of phosphate LiFePO4/C and silicate Li2FeSiO4/C composites will be

giving demonstration as the alternative cathodes for rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Both the

phosphate and silicate composites can be synthesized as nanostructured and/or micro-nano

hierarchically structured materials with thin carbon layer coating at the surfaces. The

nanostructured composites show excellent high-rate performance and long-term cyclability, while

the micro-nano hierarchically structured composites show both superior high-rate capability and

high tap density as cathodes for rechargeable Li-ion batteries. For monoclinic Li2FeSiO4/C, the

capabilities at low current density are believed to be related to both Fe2+/Fe3+ and Fe3+/Fe4+

redox couples, as suggested by the Mössbauer spectra for the electrode materials. All these

results suggest that specially structured phosphate and silicate composites are very promising

candidates as cheap and sustainable cathode materials for the next generation of rechargeable

lithium ion batteries.
